Pills, pills and more pills

10Jun08

I feel like I am going to have a rant today as when I watch television I can’t believe the amount of adverts that tell about medication we can take for allergies, hayfever, bowel problems, athelete’s foot, bowel flora etc ! I find myself talking to the telly and telling the advert off!

Why do we seek a pill and feel that this will be the answer, how I see it, is that coming from a complementary view what I want to know is why the problem is there in the first place.

As a therapist I would be asking these questions, looking at lifestyle to see whether this is a factor on why health issue’s come up, which includes stress, diet, sleep pattern, bowel movements,, does it happen more at any particular time of day or night. There are more but I feel these are all valid questions to ask when say for example you have never suffered from hayfever before then suddenly it comes on one year. Here I would want to know if anything had changed in that person’s life, as why just suddenly suffer?

I have also just taken on a medical herbalist, she has had medical training but  will prescribe using herbs, which if you think about it, herbs have been used for centuries by many different cultures and also used as a basis for allopathic medication as they have such medicinal usage.

I would long to see more people realising the benefits of what complementary health has to offer, not only are the appointments at least an hour, the client is listened to, lifestyle taken into consideration and you are looked at on so many other aspects on trying to find out why suddenly your health is being impacted.

I have used complementary medicine for all my ills, which are not that many I have to say! I also have my 4 year old treated this way and notice that her recovery time is generally much quicker than taking lots of allopathic drugs, I guess her system copes alot more naturally and even though I think children should get colds to boost their immune systems, I don’t want to suppress the illness with lots of decongestants, better for them to let it all come up and out!

Summer In Style

23May08

I would like to draw everyone’s attention to an event that Exceptional Health will be attending in Canary Wharf called Summer In Style, on Thursday 29th May from 5pm till 9pm.

The whole of Canary Wharf will be involved and it looks to be a fun night out with all shop’s giving discounts, stalls set up including us where we will be offering free taster sessions, all therapists on hand to answer any questions on health and lifestyle. We will be based in the cut through by Monsoon and cuts through to the tube.

Also, much to my amazement, I have got all my therapists on board to offer discounts on all therapies to which i have done a flyer explaining them all. these would have to be booked by the end of June and used within 3 months of booking, so it would be worth your while to come andf join in the fun.

I will update my blog and let you know how it all went!

Colonic Hydrotherapy

01Apr08

I never thought I would be writing about this but hey here I go! I have this clinic in Canary Wharf and I have been thinking about what types of other therapies to bring in and a friend of mine whom I have known since practicing complementary health, all of 14 years ago and who I see for homeopathy, well she also does colonic hydrotherapy.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, we were talking on the phone and I said that I would like to have colonic here at the clinic and had found a therapists who came and had a look at the clinic but since then I have not heard from so I gathered they were not interested, so my friend said she would consider it. So she came and had a look and I am hoping to have her here practicing by the end of May.

Yesturday however I went over to her house for homeopathy for me and my daughter then the plan was to go to her clinic and have a look at how the system of colonic’s is set up, then after was going to go food shopping and get home! This did not happen as she asked me to have a session, to which I said, “no, you are alright” But would she take no for an answer, so I had my first experience of colonic hydrotherapy.

What was so interesting was that I thought that I was generally healthy, I eat really well, hardly ever drink alcohol, maybe have too much coffee sometimes and guess what, how toxic was I! She talked me through what was coming through the tube but what amazed me was nothing moved at first because the tube was full of air, and there was me thinking it was in the tube but what it actually was, my wind/gas! This had to pass out before ther rest of my contents started coming out! I never thought for a minute that it was all so complicated and like I said, I really thought that I would be relatively healthy, how wrong was I.

How I felt after was quite tired but after a couple of hours I felt completely energised, my skin was clearer, my stomach felt softer. The therapist told me that I needed to have more sessions as I was some what toxic and it is best if you do a shortcourse of treatments.

I don’t feel that the therapy is a way that you get healthy, alot of other things are needed as in a healthy diet, managing your stress, hydration, sleep, rest, and lots of fun!

New to Exceptional Health

13Mar08

Hello, I have been very busy getting the clinic filled with more exceptional therapists to join the team here. I am excited about bringing on board a Thai massage therapist and shortly I will be having a dietrician who works very closely with GP’s on diet related issues, she will be starting towards the end of the month. And lastly, a company are joining me called urBOD, who are a group of 3 practitioners who are all nutritionist who also specialise in fertility, pregnancy, infertility.

I am hoping to get  colonic hydrotherapy here by May but I am only in the discussion  stage of this as it is more complicated to set up than I ever imagined, more to do with plumbing! I have realised that there is no-where in the docklands that this therapy is available, so I hope that she will be joining us.

Lastly, the other therapy I would love to have here is natural beauty as I feel that we have too much rubbish that we plaster on our faces, full of more toxicity and I talking more about botox!. I am in talks with a company that provide pure organic products and I hope to carry a range here to sell.

I will keep you informed of new therapies that arecoming to Exceptional Health.

Been Busy

28Feb08

Hello

It’s funny as when I got this blog set up on the website I thought, fab I can do all these blogs on a weekly basis, letting people know what we are about here at Exceptional Health, keep them informed of health issues, my discoveries being a therapist and really I have been quite slack! Where does all the time go!

I can’t say I have been lazy, no way, been busy not just in my professional life but being a lone parent with a 3 year old also takes up time, not that I am complaining, it’s all great!

So what have I  been upto this year, been focussing alot on the clinic, thinking up ways of getting busier for all the therapists and realising that as we are a small business in the scheme of corporate businesses that are here in the wharf. I have therefore realised that it is good to link up with like minded small companies and look at how we can all help each other out on the marketing front. I have done just that, we are swapping with City Bunker and they are offering deals for Exceptional Health clients at a reduced cost, so good news for clients. www.citybunker.co.uk if you want to know what they are about. Visit our web site for the special offers they are offering us.

The other thing that I have done is joined the Wellbing Network and again we have some offers from them to, again look at our web site under company news to see what is on offer.

I have also been looking for therapists to come and join us here and in April we will be joined by a company called UrBod, they are a team of nutritionist and have a very different view to nutrition, again if you wish to find out what they are about go to www.urbod.co.uk

In March we have a dietician joining and she works closely within the NHS, again I am excited at seeing her get busy.

New therapists to the clinic are Martin who does Thai massage as well as sports massage.

So you see I have not been watching time slip away doing nothing but I will try and write a little more often ! I hope this finds everyone well, dandy and happy with life!

Happy New Year

03Jan08

Happy New Year to everybody ! Well that is it for another year and are many of you saying ‘Phew’? All the excesses of eating, drinking, staying up late.

So, what does 2008 have in-store for us all, well I know that many of my clients will be de-toxing from alcohol for this month and thinking now is the time to get fit, but I suggest that we try and change to much in a short space of time and end up just reverting back to old habits! Also this is the wrong time of year to de-tox properly as it’s cold, damp and grey, so our bodies need care and attention not sudden withdrawal which ends up making you feel ill and like I mentioned more than likely go back to old habits!

The best time to give your bodies the over haul is at the beginning of Spring, march time when the days are brighter, its not so cold and damp and life is starting increase outside, trees getting their leaves back, flowers starting to bloom. This is when our bodies are coming out of hibernation and would cope much better with a clear out than in January!

Winter Ills

27Nov07

The weather seems to be playing havoc with everyone’s health at the moment, myself included! What is needed is a long cold spell to kill off the germs but alas that is not happening, as one minute it’s freezing then it goes mild again.

I have had a bad cough for 2 weeks and now it has moved to my sinuses and I have a glorious cold sore to go with it! As I am a homeopath I have not been using my remedies that I always make up for everybody else, clients and friends, more fool me really. I have come into work today and made up lots of remedies for myself to take so I can knock this into touch.

I have lots of things that are tried and tested from clients that I make up to help them overcome their illnesses. So if you are wanting help to get over something it is worth checking me out, even if you are not a client with me, I am often here and handing out remerdies to other therapist’s clients.

Autumn Arrives

18Sep07

I have noticed the change in the weather although as many of us have discussed we had a dreadful summer, so apart from being a little bit colder at least it is not raining to!

What I wanted to write about today was looking at keeping us virus free for the next 6 months, last year I was treating so many clients who had caught a cold, could not shift it and then once they thought they had got over it, get it again. So, I thought next year I must give my clients more preventative methods to keep their immune systems up.

Firstly, of course it does not help that you are all working in close proximity and because work loads for people are so huge and of course we want to be seen as putting in those hours regardless of how we are feeling. I mean how many times during the colder weather do you travel on public transport or be at work and there is someone with mucous streaming fro their nose or they have a hacking cough ! Due to the fact we are so air conditioned now, those germs hit that system and spread. Also we don’t seem to have extreme cold spells for long enough which halts the prolification of germs, one day cold next mild and the germs love it!

I wish I could remember when I heard it on the news, but it was about 3 months ago, scientists in America have proved that echinacea does increase ones immune system, but there is a rule to taking it, 6 weeks on and 2 weeks. We sell it here at the clinic and also a children version.

Of course one way you can keep your selves healthy is with a good diet, I am not saying that you have to be extreme, but making sure a lot of it is fresh foods and also boosting your diet with some Multi vitamin & Minerals, Vitamin C. I am not a huge fan of supplements but if you can’t always keep a check on your diet then to hit the supplements for a few months would help.

Besides these, I am a homeopath and I use western herbs, so I also do combination remedies either homeopathic or herbal to help reduce system of really any kind of illness. Sometimes I get a call from a client whom I may not of seen but has been to the clinic and it was suggested to them to give me a call to see if I can make a remedy up for them to help combat what they are suffering from. I even have a great hang over cure, tried and tested to be 100% successful !

If you would like to come and see me here at the clinic to discuss ways of boosting your immune for the cold weather or you are ill and want some help shifting it, please contact me either by phone or e-mail.

Back from holiday

12Sep07

Just got back from my summer holidays, feeling relaxed, not exactly rested and noticing I need to get my diet back to health, sound familiar!

I went to France, camping with my friend who has 3 kids and my one child. Why do I say not rested, well 4 kids camping, raining most of the time and if it wasn’t the rain waking me at night, the owls did or at least one child woke in the night!

So what do you do for 10 days in a wet tent with 4 children under 5 years old, eat ! I am honestly not surprised that I do not look like a french baguette, a croissant or pain au chocolat ! I have realised that when I go away I come home craving vegetables and a decent space to cook in!

As it rained most of the time, cramming us all in a tent was o.k but having to try and cook some decent food in there as well made it somewhat difficult and we had a saying ‘hot water in the house’, so the kids did not crash into the camping stove and either set themselves or the tent on fire!

French way of life I could do, the food markets, local produce, fresh veg, salad, cheese and of course the boulangerie. The trouble was alot of what we could of done was inhibited by the down pours of rain. I found myself the one who cooked most nights but had to think really hard about what was convenient to do on a camping stove and also that the kids were getting good nutrition but sometimes that just went straight out the tent! Bread for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and some half decent food for dinner.

When we got home, the thought of toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch was not what I wanted. I spent the first week back eating fish or vegetarian dishes! All in all when on holiday I know we all think it’s o.k to eat what ever but I find that on coming home my digestion is really out of kilter and it takes me another month to get it back on track!

Depression amongst the young

02Aug07

I turned 40 last week and I have noticed how different I feel, grown up and I feel now I am in adulthood!

What I have also noticed over the last year or so is how many young people are being diagnosed with depression, my niece who turned 18 this year has just come off anti-depressants!

When my sister told me the eldest was going to be put on anti-depressants I went nuts, could not believe that someone at 17 at the time could have that many issues. But needless to say she went on them for 8 months and they actually made no real difference at all. It was then that I started to get curious and suddenly came more aware of the amount of people that come to me with anxiety, stress, sudden low’s who originally have gone to see the doctor and it was suggested to them to go on anti-depressants. What is funny is that most of them are quite horrified at the suggestion and therefore seek alternative avenues to combat their stress. This is where I come in and my clinic, offering a range of therapies that help cope with stress and give them the time to talk about the issues that are causing the stress.
I have just read an article on the BBC news internet about a year long study of 1,000 32 year olds and found 45% of new cases of depression and anxiety. They put it down to work load and the demand they are under with no proper social time. One doctor suggests that with the currant technology available now that companies need to incorporate a more flexible working week that people are able to manage so that their social time is met so they are able to unwind effectively. In conclusion it concerns me that younger and younger people are despondent at what life is, when I was 18 I was having the time of my life and getting into all sorts of mischief, all of it legal! In an age where there is so much more out there we don’t seem to be as creative with our time, is that because we have so little of it that all the mundane things need to be done, so we are constantly playing catch up with everything and everybody?
